James took another sip from his drink.

The room was not particularly bright, the only light came from the red glow of the neon sign outside. The mood within the room was not particularly bright either.
James had not planned for this eventuality, the plan had called for a quick cup of coffee perhaps a early dinner not a night spent with someone who should not have been here.
And not her at all
"Is there something wrong?" she asked him
A simple question asked, less simple to answer. in a simple question came a multitude of issues.
"Naw not really."
She was not a simple woman, nor was she not aware of the obvious events that might happen after the sun would rise in the morning. she moved herself to the tiny table and sat on one of the only two chairs in the room. james sat on the other that was next to the window. the room was small but the distance between them spanned much more than just a mere few feet.
or so James thought
James lit a cigarette, she passed him the ash tray. "Do you want me to leave?"
without answering her question James asked one of his own. "How long we've known eachother?"
"About four years now. why?"
"You being here is it because of our past together or is it because of your past with him?" James half expected her to be upset with his question, he did not expect her to laugh at it. she saw that her reaction had caught him by surprise.
"Oh, dont get me wrong. thats a fair enough question, but question sounds like it has more to do with you than with me. I had a whim to give you a call, low and beyold we're at the same place at the same time, you ask me for a cup of coffee and I said sure. Perhaps it wasnt the best timing, but still I choose to meet you. So we got together and we talked. Ok I mostly talked and you mostly listened. (she smiled a half crooked smile in an attempt to lighten the mood, James smiled back.)" she stood up and made her way over to James.
"I liked the fact that you listened and when you decided to comment or give your opinion I enjoyed it and liked it" Nicole sat on the windowsill, took James's cigarette from him, snuffed it out, and moved the ashtray to the table. " You flew into town lastnight for a card game, I just happen to be in town as well. take it as a sign, me calling you. Tomorrow we both fly back to our respective lives, seperate of each other." Nicole stood up, she combed her fingers through, James's hair "tonight is what it is, just that."
James was not exactly sure what she meant by everything she had said, but her voice, the strength in her body, thewarmth of her touch. whatever anxiety, fear, doubt, or other clich'ic emotions that are envovled with a night like tonight disappeared. he stood to meet her gaze, placed his arms around her waist and kissed her.

"James, you ok?" Leticia had moved from across the room to stand next to James and to join him in looking at the tattooed woman near the Black-Jack table.
"Yeah, I'm good just thinking about a Howard Jones song."
